If you or a loved one are experiencing a mental health emergency, here are resources for your support:

  • Call 911 and ask for a Crisis Team Intervention (CTI) officer or go to your nearest emergency department. 

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing mental health-related distress — call, text or chat options are available.

  • Ayuda en español: Si está pasando por una crisis y necesita ayuda, puede llamar a la Red Nacional de Prevención del Suicidio al 1-888-628-9454. Spanish hotline: If you’re undergoing a crisis and need help from a Spanish-speaking suicide hotline, you can call 1-888-628-9454.

  • The Smith Family Behavioral Health Urgent Care provides an alternative to Emergency Room and Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitalization for  individuals who have a mental illness and/or substance use disorder . Find all the you need about BHUC here.

  • Atrium Health Behavioral Health Charlotte is the only dedicated psychiatric emergency department in the region. Find all of the info you need about the center here.

Time Out Youth is a Charlotte-based organization that provides safe, affirming support for LGBTQ+ young people ages 11–20. They offer drop-in hours, social programs, support groups, and resources for youth and their families. Their mission is to create a welcoming space where young people can connect, feel understood, and access the support they need to thrive.

TEACCH is a statewide, evidence-based program through UNC that provides support for individuals with autism and their families across the lifespan. They offer diagnostic services, parent training, individualized interventions, social groups, and professional consultations. TEACCH focuses on creating structured, supportive environments that build on each individual’s strengths and help them learn, grow, and thrive.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a worldwide fellowship that offers peer-led support for individuals seeking recovery from alcohol use. Through regular meetings, shared experiences, and a 12-step framework, AA provides a confidential, judgment-free space to connect with others and build a foundation for lasting sobriety. Meetings are free, widely available, and open to anyone who has a desire to stop drinking.

Al-Anon/Alateen offers support for family members and loved ones of individuals struggling with alcohol use. Through peer-led groups, shared stories, and practical tools, Al-Anon provides a compassionate, confidential space to reduce isolation and help families cope with the challenges of a loved one’s drinking. Meetings are free, widely available, and open to anyone seeking support.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Exceptional Children Services provides evaluations, special education supports, and individualized services for students with disabilities. They offer IEP development, specialized instruction, related services (such as speech, OT, or counseling), and family support to ensure students can learn and thrive in the school environment. Their goal is to partner with families and school teams to meet each child’s unique needs.
